Some say that when Henry Ford visited Venice in 1928, he asked his aristocratic host where he could play golf. At that time there was no course in the area, but not wanting to disappoint future guests, Count Giuseppe Volpi had a nine-hole course built on the Lido. Circolo Golf Venezia was one of the earliest clubs in Italy and later enlarged to an 18-hole par-72 course near a wild beach where Goethe went to watch the waves. The course is not particularly challenging except on windy days, but it’s fun to play and the native flora and fauna along the fairways are appealing. Clubs can be rented for €20 from the pro shop and tee times should be reserved in advance.
